It’s been over a month since Amazon quietly rolled out it’s new office in Ottawa, Canada. As reported by the Ottawa Business Journal (OBJ) last month, the creator of Echo has ambitious hiring plans to round out development of it’s Alexa platform.
Francois Boisvert, a software development manager at Amazon who is heading up the local development team shared plans with OBJ. He revealed that Amazon will be hiring several individuals in the fields of mobile development and mobile developers for “voice-over-IP and real-time communication.” More directly, Mr. Boisvert stated that his team is helping Amazon develop new features and new abilities for the next generation of the Alexa platform.
Ottawa also has a deeper bench of talent than many other cities. Rounding out the interview, Mr. Boisvert said Amazon was attracted to Ottawa because of the city’s history as a technology development hub and the fact that there’s less competition for talent here than in major cities in the United States.
So when will Amazon Echo be officially released in Canada? Mr. Boisvert told OBJ that while Amazon is expanding its Alexa development team in Canada, it doesn’t mean the Echo itself will become available here. He went on to say it’s in the works, but no timelines have yet been released.
